There was a time when the church (in England) pressured the government into disbanding the celebration of Christmas. It was the secular society that wanted it. The church (Puritans for the most part) wanted it stopped because it had turned into an excuse for drunkenness and disorder. Christmas was banned, for about 20 years or so, until the public demanded it reinstated.

Who would cry the most if it was taken away - the Christian community or the stores?
