Wow. I thought I was the only one dealing with this. I have never had a driver's license, marriage or divorce, been arrested or served in the military. I had the misfortune of losing my purse with my state id and social security card inside. Since I rarely use these documents, after jumping through hoops to attempt to have the id re-issued, I find out it is expired. Great. Now my only hope is to obtain transcripts from my high school which I last attended in the late 80s. Texas says that and a registered voter card with my birth certificate is enough to get my state id. Never mind that my significant other and I are both listed on my children's birth certificates and have been together for 15 years. The passport offices claim you can have someone who has known you for longer than two years sign a statement in validating your identity; apparently that is untrue because every time I inquired I was ignored while they politely explained to me that I can't apply without some form of photo id, but of course they can take my money. A document which appears as though it would be more easily obtainable if I were an immigrant. I have been arguing with officials, contacted the mayor and even contemplated speaking to the Congressman about this outrageousness. To lose one's identification documents as you mentioned, renders you a stateless citizen. It is appalling and offensive that I, a natural born citizen have no recourse against this. When will my fellow Americans stand up against this facism?

Through this experience I have considered breaking the law and buying fake ids, presenting myself as a Mexican National applying for citizenship (a laughable idea if you could see me and hear my horrendous spanish), looking for someone to bribe, contacting the ACLU, along with a few other alternatives. I am so angry and I don't have copious amounts of money to waste on a process that literally does little to safeguard the United States but goes a long way towards penalizing true citizens while bilking them out of their hard earned money. Submit to their demands or be rendered a non-existant entity.
