Britain, Canada, and most of Europe have 'socialist' types of welfare states, and I agree that they are expensive. However, before blaming those things that really do help 'the people', perhaps you could turn your attention to the insane amount of money that goes into the military in the US. Check out what James Madison said: ...The Brilliance of James Madison (http://csper.wordpress.com/2010/08/04/on-war-armies-and-the-brilliance-of-james-madison/)
First - the US treasury should reserve for itself the sole right to create money - not the Federal Reserve
Second - back your currency with gold
Third - control your banks
Fourth - cut down on the military
Fifth - let individual states have more power and responsibility, including healthcare, education, and employment security
I don't expect these things to happen, and will continue to watch the collapse of US hegemony with its associated blame games from accoss your Northern border.

Linda, gold/silver are down from the manipulations of "Da Boyz", JP Morgan and seven others. Well, mostly JPM and three others. It's a daily pattern, and has been extant for a long time: Gold goes up on the Hong Kong and London exchanges and then when Comex opens, Ka-wham! At some point in the morning, exactly on the hour, the not-for-profit sellers have at it.

However, the short contracts amounts are declining; down around 21 million ounces, now.

Great, Dan, and wonderful to see you back on W&G. I'm enjoying various bizarre explanations of why gold is falling. Must be all that faith we have in big government and the future.

"But how long will it be before most people understand that the Fed, the regulators, and the monetary authorities have no credibility..."

What understanding I have began with LBJ and his guns'n'butter inflation. Bert Lance of the Carter era added to my understanding of the foolishness of the money-meisters. Figuring out what's coming next has thus been relatively easy since 2005: Whatever is decided upon will be like Mr. Corrigan: Wrong Way.
