If gold really is money, then the only way the purchasing power of gold can go up is if the relative cost of producing goods and services goes down (due to automation and other productivity increases).

This might work for things like electronics, but for other things...  Not really.  

For example, 50 years ago an ounce of gold bought a man a nice suit of clothes and a good meal.  Today?  It buys a man a nice suit of clothes and a good meal.</description>
