With regard to the Chinese activities concerning gold, I think it is very intelligent on their part to be stockpiling gold and urging their citizens to acquire gold. As an asset class, gold has held up better than any other over the past few years, since the beginning of the credit crisis in 2007, and from a fundamental perspective it makes a lot of sense to own some gold in one's portfolio. I recently read several interesting articles at http://www.goldalert.com that discuss the govt's role in trying to prevent deflation, and the inflationary consequences of such actions, along with the potential impact on the gold price and mining companies leveraged to to the gold price. All of the Federal Reserve's easy money policies are creating a lot of currency debasement and putting a lot of pressure on the dollar.

Based on your article, I think it's clear what-the-heck-is-going-on-with-China... they are diversifying-the-heck-away from the dollar. I disagree with your last bit about shorting gold in order to drive the price down, then buying. If you are able to artificially influence the market like this, wouldn't you get out of your short position when you started buying again?

Fantastic, Doug. A beautiful blend of fact, analysis, and thoughtful speculation. China is scared because the financial situation there isn't as rosy as has been pictured in the MSM. We're going to see a lot of such jockying, some of it subtle, and then increasingly not subtle at all.
