Sugars..."toys" are whatever you think they are. Americans have been on a bender buying things I don't want, such as Blackberries, and houses they could not afford. All people play games, and those of other nations (and other people) are frequently incomprehensible. My point is that we have the best infrastructure, the most arable land, and the accumulation of decades of comparative wealth for our citizens. If world trade comes to an abrupt end, you bet we'll hurt for fuel until we get the Greenies under control and the government behaves sensibly. The world needs us more than we need it.

Is that better? It is a question of who can do without whom the most easily. Not supplying our own fuel needs is an emotional policy driven by power politics. What will China do with all those shiny new manufacturing plants if we stop buying? Does Brazil need us more than we need semi-precious gemstones? If the USA ever stops the jihad against drugs, what will hapen to places like Colombia? Poppies and marijuana are weeds, easy to grow. (NO, I do NOT use "recreational" drugs.) Great question, thanks. LBT

The nice thing is that people try to have an explanation to back their decisions. And most often do nothing but talking. Who cares what the price of gold will be. It affects nobody. (Unless you have a girl friend). At the end, the leaders are buying it, and the trend is up. If you don't believe in it, then don't buy. If you do, then buy. Else, why sell something when you don't have the physical behind ?

The US having the most "toys" isn't necessarily a good thing. It's ability, not stored goods that makes a viable future.

The US's dependence on these "toys" will be its undoing. Much of China knows how to subsist. In the US there's no knowledge on how to do so without being attached to the tit of capitalism and government.

It is always a pleasure to sit at your feet and learn, Mr. Denning. How about this idea? If any one of the big nations goes belly up--and the USA is the prime candidate--in terms of fiat money, do you suppose that the ripple effect would bring them all down? Very likely. At that point...who has the most toys? We do!
